d20 Modern

I was pleased to discover that d20 Modern is in the top 10 hottest RPGs being discussed according to EnWorld's Hot Roleplaying Games.
Over 1000 sites and counting! What's the current zeitgeist? What are the hottest games being talked about right now? This isn't a list of sales figures; it tracks what's currently being talked about using a top secret algorithm. Each game is also conveniently linked to a search for discussion about it right here on EN World, should you want to find out more. The spotlight list changes from time to time. The red and green arrows show a game's general trend over the last 90 days - is it being discussed more or less than it was in the previous 90 days?
This page tracks discussion of over a quarter of a million forum members and approaching a thousand blogs on a selection of major independent RPG discussion forums to create an overall sample from a list including EN WorldRPGnetUK RoleplayersRPG Geek, the RPG Bloggers network of nearly 300 blogs, the RPG Blog Alliance of nearly 600 blogs, and Reddit.
Discovering this has rekindled my interest in the rule system and revisiting the many settings. Wizards of the Coast have kept the official website live. This suggests that someone recognizes the long-lasting interest, even though it seems like WotC didn't support the game as much as they probably should have. The short run of Dungeon/Polyhedron magazine
mini-settings were some of my favorite supplements for d20 Modern. First published in 2002 (that's 11 years ago!) there has been a lot of high quality 3rd party products that have come out. Even some still coming out.

So, here's to a little bit more love for d20 Modern.

Doc Savage movie - Shane Black interview

There's a Doc Savage movie being made...

From ComingSoon.net...
It was announced back in May that Iron Man 3 director Shane Black would be bringing pulp hero Doc Savage to the big screen in a feature film adaptation. Little has been said about the project since then, but Black has now elaborated more on the film in an interview with IGN.
"Obviously in the books there's an element of 'goody goody' that we like. Doc Savage was the basis essentially for Superman because his name is Clark, he has a fortress of solitude, and 'oh Superman has the same thing, that's odd.' But that kind of perfect hero who never makes mistakes him great to a point and that type of adventure and the pulp it represents has been so immitated. Raiders of the Lost Ark is essentially a child of Doc Savage. But we needed something more.
"So we kept it in the 30s, we beefed up the sort of rationale behind what it would take to be a perfect person and to be trained as such from childhood and how that would scar someone. And what it would take to be a parent who is capable of inflicting that on your kid. But beyond that we've also tried to be true to the series, give him the helpers and it's also reinvigorating it but introducing a whole new brand of people to this is a challenge. It's been around, it's been 75 years."
The subject then changed to casting, and Black explains why there hasn't been much talk about casting since the announcement.
"Here's the problem: They kind of gotta be tall. He's the perfect physical specimen and when people look at him, they're overawed by the sort of symmetry and perfection that he exudes. I don't know that you could use like James McAvoy as Doc Savage. You couldn't do it. He's a fine actor, but we need someone big. Back in the day Schwarzenegger was talked about to play Doc Savage. I don't know who we'd get."
The idea of Thor's Chris Hemsworth as Doc Savage was brought up, to which Black replied, "That's not a bad idea. What's he doing?"
Black will direct the Doc Savage film for Sony Pictures from a script he has co-written with Anthony Bagarozzi and Charles Mondry. Neal H. Moritz is producing the project with Ori Marmur through his Original Film banner. Michael Uslan will also serve as a producer on the film. No release date is currently set.

The Last Parsec and Sci-Fi Companion

Savage Worlds Poster by JamesDenton
Back in August, Pinnacle Entertainment announced a new sci-fi setting for Savage Worlds. The Last Parsec is to be a four book series with a Star Frontiers spirit or feel to it (note- not necessarily a conversion). This will be launching in a big Kickstarter next year, with a lot more information, naturally.

Each of the four books will feature a separate planet... with it's own plot point campaign!

It also sounds like much of this will be coming out at the same time. Which is interesting.

This image is not confirmed to be any official artwork from the game. It is simply a poster created by James Denton that was used at GenCon and Origins in the Pinnacle Entertainment booth. But I wouldn't be surprised and that would be cool.

Also announced with The Last Parsec was the next genre supplement, Savage Worlds Sci-Fi Companion. It sounds like this is to come out before the Last Parsec series.

And Deadlands: Lost Colony is coming down the Pinnacle pipeline, possibly around the above projects, making Savage Worlds a sci-fi focused game in the near future.

Which is a good thing, in my opinion.

While there are several featured articles in the podcast, Sutter's reading starts around 0:28:20 into it.

spiritual truth in Dumbing of Age

David Willis portrays a great spiritual lesson in Dumbing of Age. I see this is a very realistic and loving criticism of some of the errors of Western Christianity. It is very nice to see such raw honesty in a web comic such as this.
