#RPGaDay2015 Day 31: The last chapter. Favorite non-RPG thing to come out of RPGs

I love that there are things in the Star Wars canon that originally appeared in the WEG Star Wars RPG. Some of them are even in the shows and films!

Aurebesh is the recognizable text language seen throughout the series now. This was first seen in the Star Wars Miniatures Battles publication, developed by Stephen Crane with West End Games.

The ISB (Imperial Security Bureau). The ISB has a major presence in the first season of the Rebels television series. It's first appearance was WEG's The Politics of Contraband. It's awesome to me that this kind of detail makes its way to the core of the franchise.

#RPGaDay2015 Day 27: Favorite Idea for Merging Two Games Into One

I believe I'm more of a role-player in a group of primarily min-maxers. We manage to have fun, but when trying to figure a way to accommodate everyone's RPGing wants I thought one setting might scratch all of the itches.

D&D/Pathfinder is already ridiculous. The 'kill and take their stuff' gets old for me, but it is an intrinsic outcome of how the game is designed to play, at least with our group. XCrawl is a setting that explains this as the proper behavior.

XCrawl is fantasy dungeon crawl on live television for near future reality TV fans. It's like The Running Man or Hunger Games mixed with Pathfinder.

I imagining Mean Jean interviewing the players as they are introduced coming down the ramp with a theme song and outrageous costumes, with sponsors of course! Could have awful WWF style drama going on. Faking rivalries etc. for crowd responses and effects.

I love that idea!

It's just and idea. Haven't looked at the books yet.

#RPGaDay2015 Day 26: Favorite Inspiration for Your Games

I draw a lot of ideas for RPGs from music as well as books and films for children.

One of the most inspirational sources for me would be the Miyazaki films from Studio Ghibli, incredible and wonderful. So many areas and genres to explore with that direction. The range is wide- for family to very serious and dramatic fantasy. All of it wholesome. All of it very high quality story telling.

I half have it in my head to create an elaborate and rather twisted campaign setting based on they lyrics, stories, ideas and characters that appear throughout various albums by the late Ween. Fantastic realms and mystic themes in every album. All under the watchful eye of the Boognish.

#RPGaDay2015 Day 25: Favorite Revolutionary Game Mechanic

Maybe I'm simple, but I am quite fond of the formula for melee damage in the DWAITAS/Vortex system.

The system system in general is 2d6 + Attribute + Skill (+ Trait) vs target number. Damage is portrayed with three values, each representing the degrees of success in the roll (for example, a crossbow does 4 - [2/4/6] and a punch does Strength damage, naturally). But, here's the clever formula for melee combat:

A successful melee attack with a weapon does Strength damage, but then you check these questions, add +2 for every Yes...
  • Is it sharp? Like blades for slashing or puncturing.
  • Is it heavy? Like would the character need two hands to use it.
  • Is it dangerous? Could it hurt the character on it's own or if they lost control of it, like a whip or a chainsaw.
Simple and brilliant!

#RPGaDay2015 Day 24: Favorite House Rule

With Pathfinder, we use the deck of Crit cards and Fumble cards. They can be pretty fun, but they often come up as irrelevant. But it is still more fun than a strait crit or fumble.

Our initial stat dice rules vary depending on who is GMing (3d6 x 7 drop the lowest, etc). One we used to do pretty regularly was Birthday XP. 1000XP for the character for whichever player was having a Birthday nearest the gaming date.

Kind of dropped that one since we pretty much forgo XP and just level after a couple of sessions.

#RPGaDay2015 Day 23: Perfect Game for Me

The Doctor Who: Adventures in Time and Space RPG is pretty much perfect for me.


  The Third Doctor Fourth Doctor Sourcebook

First of all I love the setting. Who doesn't love Doctor Who?! Second, by the nature of the setting, one can have pretty much anything happen any time and anywhere.

The other major reason is because of the game mechanics. I find the Vortex system quite suitable for my gaming needs and likes.

#RPGaDay2015 Day 22: Perfect Gaming Environment

For nearly three years my regular gaming group has been meeting in one of the conference rooms in the basement of a restaurant what recently upgraded from being a coffee shop. For a total of $25 worth of food and beverage, we are allowed to book the room for the entire day! So once a month we completely occupy the room, move the tables how we want them and run our game all day long. There is a waitress who pops in six or seven times throughout the day re-filling our coffees, taking our orders and delivering us our meals we order. It has always been the same server. There is free wifi available, and everything. #RPGaDay2015 Day 21: Favorite RPG Setting

Hollow Earth Expedition

There is a list of reasons:
  • Dinosaurs
  • Nazis
  • Hollow Earth
  • Mars
  • 1930s
  • Pulp
  • Secret Societies
  • Unique and light-ish system
  • High quality production value
  • Excellent art
  • Excellent fan support
  • Friendly fans
This hits all of the tropes that get me going. Ever since I got into the Indiana Jones films, 1930s pulp has been such a favorite! And there has been no lack of it in RPGs. One thing that makes this game unique is that it isn't a pulp setting for a game system trying to cover all the bases. It is a pulp game that fully tackles one major pulp trope. The Hollow Earth theory.

The Hollow Earth theory is a literary setting that caught my interest when I veered away from Tarzan and John Carter in my Burroughs obsession several years ago. I had discovered Pellucidar! I was also getting into old back issues of DC Comics Warlord. As I wrapped my head around the concept and particularly what the effects of time in the Hollow Earth were, I was completely hooked and still am. I've even created a blog that allows this obsession to vent occasionally.

Other things I like about this setting is it is not grim-dark. This is an aspect of many settings that I fear sells well these cynical days. No need for it. Too much of it anywhere else. I also like that it isn't at all inappropriate for kiddos. As a geek dad, I do desire to foster the interest in this hobby to my littles and this remains a pretty safe game to do that with. Also, plenty of elements that may appeal to my parents, who also want to share in the kiddos gaming occasionally.

So that's my choice. Hollow Earth Expedition. It's a good one.

My wife says the only thing missing from this most excellent game is Nathan Fillion.
