The Wind Rises

Described as the Farewell Masterpiece.

That, alone, makes me want to cry.

GURPS thanks to Happy Jacks

For the last several weeks I've been listening to the Happy Jacks RPG Podcast, mostly when I'm finishing up mundane things at work. Working backwards through the catalog (as many others do from the sound of it) the two systems the guys on that show most often talk about are GURPS and Savage Worlds. Both of which I have obsessed over, read, and tinkered around with pretty extensively. While Savage Worlds resurfaces as an obsession more occasionally, I've all but abandoned GURPS. Almost sold the books. I did let Martial Arts go, actually. Every time it comes up on the show I feel myself drawn back to GURPS little by little. Trying to resist. It's too complicated. Right? Well, this weekend I failed. Rolled and 18. I'm fully reading these books again. Looking at Pyramid. Again. *sigh* I love this system.

I'm currently running Rise of the Runelords for a bunch dudes that will play nothing but Pathfinder and my younglings are 6 and 4. I have no business with my nose in SJGs books! I should be prepping PF or running Mermaid Adventures.

Oh well. I'm still going to read them. Thanks a lot, Happy Jacks... douche bags.

by the way, those are alternate covers created by Eric, the pysco dominion overlord

I.M.P.S. The Relentless

I.M.P.S.: The Relentless is a fan film that made its debut on the internet in 2005, created by fans of the Star Wars franchise. I.M.P.S. (Imperial Military Personnel Stories) aims to show "the best damn job in the galaxy", that of serving on the Revenge-class Star Destroyer Relentless as it goes on patrols and missions. The series is divided into chapters, with two released to date.

After the popularity of the fan film TROOPS, members of the original cast and crew began work on a sequel. I.M.P.S. took on a more serious tone, similar to documentaries about Naval Aircraft Carriers, their battle groups, crews and missions. While no longer a specific parody like TROOPS, the film does have some humor and homages to a variety of other popular films. I.M.P.S. boasts very high production values, original music and professional visual effects.

Production began in April 1999 on a glacier at the top of Mount Shasta in Siskiyou County, California, while post production has continued through 2005. Most of the sets were built in a 400 square-foot garage in Glendale, California.

The fan-made series was created by Eric Hilleary, Dave Max, Caleb Skinner, Nathan Pata, Pete Evans, Dave Marshall, Bill Hay and Andy Garfield. Hilleary, Max and Skinner constructed all the armor and appeared as Troopers in TROOPS. The first episode of the multi-chapter story was released on May 18, 2005, after being delayed twice for editing and sound remixing.

The Relentless is a Revenge-class Star Destroyer which is on patrol near the Outer Rim with its fleet. It is mentioned in the film that the fleet's duties included forcing peace and restoring order to hundreds of star systems in a sector of the galaxy.

Age of Rebellion

Look at this cover! I can't wait.
Fantasy Flight Games is proud to announce the upcoming Star Wars®: Age of Rebellion™ Core Rulebook! The second of three standalone, cross-compatible roleplaying games, Age of Rebellion allows you to become a hero of the Rebel Alliance, and take on the sinister Galactic Empire. The Age of Rebellion Core Rulebook provides everything you and your friends need to wage guerrilla warfare across the galaxy.
Do You Have What it Takes?
The Empire treats all Rebels harshly. Sympathizers are imprisoned and questioned about other Rebels. Captured Rebels are imprisoned locally, shipped off to prison planets, or executed as traitors to the Empire. Once in Imperial hands, many are never seen again.

The Rebels’ drive to destroy the Empire reflects their spirit and determination to live free. They fight for freedom from oppression for both themselves and for others. They reject the Emperor and his fear-mongering and oppressive ways. They brave the consequences in hope of building a better life for themselves, their families, and the galaxy at large.
The Rebel Alliance is the greatest hope and biggest single symbol of dissent in the galaxy. Its success emboldens others to join the fight. But to succeed, the Rebel Alliance requires people of all types and capabilities. It needs military officers and personnel from admirals to soldiers to staff its ships and armies. It needs spies and saboteurs to infiltrate the Imperial bureaucracy and military facilities. It needs mechanics and technicians, scouts and doctors, engineers and procurement specialists. In short, just about everyone has a skill the Rebellion could use somewhere in the galaxy.
Do you have the tenacity and courage it takes to become a Rebel hero?
Stay in the Action
The core mechanic of the Age of Rebellion is the skill check. At times, the GM will have the characters roll pools of dice to determine whether their actions succeed or fail. Whenever you roll a skill check, you compare a pool of “positive dice” and their results against the results of a pool of “negative dice.” Positive dice help your character accomplish a task or achieve beneficial side effects. These dice may reflect your character's innate talents or abilities, special training, superior resources, or other advantages that could be applied to the specific task. Negative dice represent the forces that could hinder or disrupt your character, such as the inherent difficulty of the task, obstacles, additional risks, or the efforts of another character to thwart the task.

What’s Inside the Age of Rebellion Core Rulebook?
The heart and soul of Age of Rebellion is the 464-page Core Rulebook. It includes everything players and GMs need to start their Star Wars roleplaying campaign:
  • An introduction to roleplaying in the Star Wars universe
  • Concise rules for character generation and advancement
  • Clear descriptions of the game’s skills and talents
  • Convenient charts of weapons, gear, devices, starships, and vehicles
  • Rules for conflict, combat, and Force Sensitive Emergents in an Age of Rebellion campaign
  • Extensive background information on the Star Wars universe, including a history of the Rebel Alliance and its tactics, as well as pertinent information on the powerful Empire
  • A wealth of advice for GMs on how to create and run an Age of Rebellion campaign
  • A complete, introductory adventure to launch players into action!
The Star Wars: Age of Rebellion Core Rulebook will hit store shelves in the second quarter of 2014. In the meantime, find more information on the Age of Rebellion website.

Sigil & Shadow

Zombie Hunter by Angela-T
Sigil & Shadow is a setting powered by the d00Lite system from BareBones Fantasy and Covert Ops. Written by R.E. Davis. Here's what he had to say...
I’m happy to announce a new gaming project I’m working on for DwD Studios!
Sigil & Shadow is a “BareBones RPG of Modern Horror and Urban Fantasy.” It will use the d00Lite System (the same featured in BareBones Fantasy and Covert Ops,) and like those titles will be released under the Creative Commons BY-NC-SA License.
I plan on keeping the spirit of the system — if you’ve played any other d00Lite title, you’re already familiar with the bulk of the game mechanics. Even though you’ll see a lot of overlap from both Covert Ops andBareBones Fantasy, I’m doing more than just mashing the two together.  The biggest addition will be the approach for designing “Creepers” (our term for supernatural characters) — instead of forcing players and Game Masters into a specific set of powers and lore, we’re going to provide a fast and easy toolkit for creating whatever “thing that goes bump in the night” you want. It’ll be a system for both the GM to create archetypes and templates for their game world, or to let players invent their very own type of supernatural character. Much like the spell system from BBF, you can expect a broad power listing for you to skin appropriately to your mythos.
There’s also a couple more new mechanics on the workbench currently: a “Terror & Sanity” mechanic, as well as a system for magical rituals that any character can be a part of. All I can say at this time is I’m doing my damnedest to make sure these aren’t unnecessary tack-ons, and instead take advantage of existing systems. Expect to see Moral Code and Descriptors having a bit more use in game play.
More at his blog here.

The first thought that came to me was of the short lived comic, Spooks, about paramilitary monster hunters vs... monsters by Larry Hama (G.I. Joe) and R.A. Salvatore (Forgotten Realms), where Larry wrote the military spy side of the stories and R.A. wrote the monsters. What a cool idea that was.

We're getting some Star Wars Rebels this summer!
"...the rich universe of Star Wars has tremendous creative potential for the entire company. While the world eagerly awaits Episode VII to open in theaters, we’re introducing Star Wars Rebels to television audiences this summer with a movie and a series of shorts on Disney Channel, followed by a continuing series on Disney XD. Our success in building a robust pipeline of original Star Wars content for various platforms will be an integral part of our long-term strategy to leverage the franchise across a variety of our businesses, from theme parks to consumer products."
that was from a Disney shareholder's letter sent out recently according to Jedi News.

Ronia the Robber's Daughter

An announcement about a television series from Studio Ghibli!
Studio Ghibli just announced its first ever TV series, and even more exciting it’s an adaptation of a book by Astrid Lindgren. “Sanzoku no Musume Ronja”, or “Ronja the Robber’s Daughter”, will be aired in Japan starting on August 31. It is a coproduction with 3DCG studio Polygon Pictures (known for animating some of Ghost in the Shell, among others), to be directed by Goro Miyazaki. More details are forthcoming.
The story is of a little girl named Ronja, the daughter of a colourful robber chieftain who lives in a castle high on a rock in a dark pine forest. She gets to know the creatures of the forest, meets another kid like herself, and questions her father’s life of robbery.

So is it Ronja or Ronia?
