#RPGaDay2016, Day 26 - What hobbies go well with RPGs?

I would say the most compatible hobby or activity that goes well with many RPGs would be improv acting. Roleplaying, by it's essence, is improv acting. The advices for each are the same. Yes/And.

The hobby that usually is associated with RPGs is comics. Though I don't see the immediate connection other than venue. Maybe also fanbase.

#RPGaDay2016, Day 21 - Funniest misinterpretation of a rule in your group?

My group is full of very knowledgeable min-maxing murder-hobos. They are the cliche. So ours are probably more deliberately misinterpreted rules.

Like how our wizard is the primary trap detector... by summoning a horse to walk ahead of the party.

#RPGaDay2016, Day 20 - Most challenging, but rewarding system you have learned?

The system I have used by a far far vast majority is the d20 System. In retrospect, it is a pretty crunchy system. But with the sheer amount of playing of that system, it has been the absolute most rewarding.

For all of it's flaws, I am still quite fond of the system. Particularly, Spycraft and d20 Modern.

We still play it today with no end in sight, as my group won't give up Pathfinder.

I would say the advances in conferencing online has been the most game changing (heh, see what I did there) to the industry as of late. Further advances can only help groups, allowing more and more remote playing.

Not sure if he would be a great fit for our group, but one fictional character I would desire to have would be Harris Trinsky. This is the guy that was reading the Monster Manual in Freaks and Geeks. He was their DM in the finale episode. Hats off to Harris.

#RPGaDay2016, Your best source for inspiration for RPGs?

I'm reposting last year's answer to the very similar question because it was one of my favorites of last year's posts:

I draw a lot of ideas for RPGs from music as well as books and films for children.

One of the most inspirational sources for me would be the Miyazaki films from Studio Ghibli, incredible and wonderful. So many areas and genres to explore with that direction. The range is wide- for family to very serious and dramatic fantasy. All of it wholesome. All of it very high quality story telling.

I half have it in my head to create an elaborate and rather twisted campaign setting based on they lyrics, stories, ideas and characters that appear throughout various albums by the late Ween. Fantastic realms and mystic themes in every album. All under the watchful eye of the Boognish.

#RPGaDay2016, Day 14 - Your dream team of people you used to game with.

The question is unclear. If it is a dream team of people you would wish to play with, (but probably never will) than I'd love to play in a GURPS game run by The Mook.

If it is a dream team of people you HAVE played with in the past, I would love to play Top Secret/S.I. with my brother and Amos (whose middle name is, honest to God, Orion!) and Treleven, where ever he may be!

Or the old TSR FASRIP Marvel game with my brother again, my cousin and Eric Parsins- who introduced us to this crazy hobby.

There is an imaginatory synergy that a group can sometimes reach. With the right combination of players, the right combination of player moods, a comfortably safe place, a good system and a good story. Everyone is having fun... If you can reach this in one campaign more than once, I believe you have a successful campaign.

#RPGaDay2016 day 12 - What game is your group most likely going to play next? Why?


A very slim chance there will be a Mutants & Masterminds 2nd Ed campaign in our future, but it most likely going to continue to be, and forever will be, Pathfinder.

Why? Because they're narrow sighted and frightened by all the bright colors and innovative new systems. It was almost difficult for them to let go of 3.5 to go to Pathfinder when it came out! I feel they only made the jump because they were cornered by 4th Ed.

A couple of them dabbled with 5th Ed, but for whatever reason that system is strongly rejected. I have yet to try it. My view on it remains wide open!

I just hope Starfinder isn't a difficult leap for these fellows!

As for at home with the kiddos... well that's a whole different story! I'm trying to decide if we're going to use Savage Worlds, Ubiquity, Opend6, some sort of Fudge or Fate system, or do I train them up in GURPS? Not sure yet!

#RPGaDay2016 Day 11 - Which gamer most affected the way you play?

Tod Gelle (who works for Fantasy Flight Games) ran two separate games in which I actually played the same character in the two totally separate campaigns and systems.

This was back before the d20 craze, somewhere in the later '90s. Yes, that does date me. The first game was one of the original versions of Deadlands and the second game was Werewolf: Wild West. So the two games had a lot in common right out of the gates. While everyone else was min/maxing the numbers to get the deadliest combo and toughest characters, I was over here making a feeble doctor-type with very little weapon skill and far better suited for the city life. It was a gamble and maybe a passive aggressive statement against all the munchkinism going on in my group, yes. But the result was that Tod as the GM rewarded me and my character with more spotlight time than was fair. I suspect it was because he found my character the most interesting rather than a concious decision to reward my decisions. But none-the-less, it taught me that age old lesson that flawed characters are far far more fun to play.


I had forgotten about that bullet hole through the Werewolf book. That was kind of cool!

#RPGaDay2016 day 10 - Largest in-game surprise you have experienced

GENCON 2012. Ubiquity/Hollow Earth Expedition adventure run by ReaperWolf. I pray this isn't a spoiler for anyone. Sorry if it is....

The big bad monsters we were just barely surviving up against... were babies! And the mother was waking!

Probably a pretty standard twist, but so masterfully done it blew my mind. Never forget it!
